License Error Your Avira license has expired

Avira says your licence has expired and protection features are locked

11 min read Updated October 4, 2026 Antivirus & Endpoint Security

Fix it now

Avira has asked whether a current entitlement covers this installation and been told no, so the paid components have switched off and the free tier is what remains. The entitlement is a record held against your Avira account, not a file on the machine, so the answer is in the account rather than on the PC.

  1. Open the Avira app and find its licence or subscription page. Note the product name and the end date it shows for this installation.
  2. Sign in at my.avira.com, hover over your name and choose Subscriptions. Read what is under Active Subscriptions, and whether it matches the product on the PC.
  3. Open Devices in the left menu and check whether this computer is listed. If it is not, add it from there and let the app resynchronise.
  4. If the app is signed into a different account from the one holding the subscription, sign it out and back in with the correct address.
  5. If the term has genuinely ended, renew or apply a current licence to that account, then restart the machine so the state is re-read rather than served from cache.

Avira documents one case that looks exactly like an expiry and is not: a device without TLS 1.2 support can be downgraded to the free version with a perfectly valid licence. Its published remedy is to install .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later.

If the app now shows a future end date and the paid components are available, you are done. If it does not, the next section covers what the client is actually asking and the four ways the answer comes back wrong.

Why it happens

Your entitlement is a record held by Avira: a product, a term, and the devices it covers. Current releases tie that record to an Avira account the app signs into, so the installation holds a cached answer from its last successful check rather than a licence file. That cache is why the message can appear days after the term ended, and why it sometimes appears on a subscription you have already renewed.

What survives an expiry is the free tier. What stops are the paid components, and which ones those are depends on the tier you bought rather than on anything you can read from the error. Open the product page in the app and see what is now marked as unavailable, because people commonly discover that the feature they valued most sat in a higher tier than the one they were renewing.

Avira publishes a separate cause that produces the same visible result and has nothing to do with your subscription. Where a device cannot negotiate TLS 1.2, the app cannot complete the secure connection it needs, and Avira documents the consequences plainly: a valid licence may be downgraded to the free version, you may be logged out after a while, and the login, register and purchase pages may stop working. Its published fix is .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later, after which TLS 1.2 is enabled by default. On a current Windows release this should not arise, which makes it a question for older or long-neglected machines.

Account confusion accounts for a large share of the rest. Avira sits in the same corporate group as several other consumer security brands, so renewal emails and billing entries can arrive under a name you do not immediately connect with Avira. If you have a payment receipt and the app insists you are unlicensed, the money almost certainly reached an account other than the one this installation is signed into.

The term ended and renewal did not happen

You have this one if The end date under Active Subscriptions is in the past, and there is no recent renewal in the order history.

  1. Check the automatic renewal setting and the stored payment method. An expired card is the usual reason a renewal fails silently.
  2. Renew, or apply a key you have bought, to that account.
  3. Restart the computer so the installation re-reads its state rather than using the cached answer.
  4. Confirm the app now shows a future end date and the paid components as available.

The subscription is on a different account

You have this one if You have a receipt, but the account the app is signed into shows nothing under Active Subscriptions, or shows a product you do not recognise.

  1. Find the order confirmation and note which email address received it.
  2. Sign in at my.avira.com with that address and confirm the subscription is there.
  3. On the PC, sign the app out of the wrong account and back in with the right one.
  4. If your licensing has ended up split across two accounts, ask Avira support to consolidate rather than living with the split.

This device is not attached to the subscription

You have this one if The account and subscription are both correct, and this computer does not appear under Devices.

  1. Open Devices in the left menu of your Avira account and see what is listed.
  2. Remove machines you no longer own, then add this one from the Protect other devices tile.
  3. Restart the PC and reopen the app.
  4. Confirm it now reports the subscription rather than the expiry notice.

The client cannot complete its check at all

You have this one if Everything looks right in the account, and the machine is old, has been offline, sits behind a strict proxy, or has a badly wrong date.

  1. Check the system clock and time zone first. A large date error breaks the secure connection the check depends on.
  2. Run w32tm /resync from an elevated Command Prompt and confirm the time corrects.
  3. Install .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later, which is Avira’s documented remedy where TLS 1.2 is missing.
  4. If a proxy or TLS-inspecting appliance sits in the path, have Avira’s endpoints excluded from inspection.

Reading your situation before you pay again

What you find What it means
Active Subscriptions shows a current plan, device not under Devices The installation is not attached to the subscription
Current plan, device listed, app still complains The client cannot revalidate. Check the clock, TLS support, proxy and connection
Nothing under Active Subscriptions, or a different product The purchase is on another account or email address
End date in the past It has genuinely lapsed. Renewal is off, or a payment failed
The app is signed out entirely Nothing is being asked, so no entitlement can be found

What the numbers alongside the message are worth

Three numeric codes circulate with this message: 507, 556 and 551. Avira publishes no meaning for any of them, and neither does anyone else who is not simply repeating a forum post. Treat them as an internal identifier for a licensing call that did not return an entitlement, and diagnose from the account and the connection instead. Any page that tells you 507 means one specific thing is guessing, and the guess is not load-bearing: nothing about the fix changes with the number.

Reinstalling, and what it does not do

Avira documents reinstalling an activated product through the account: sign in at my.avira.com, hover over your name, choose Subscriptions, pick the product under Active Subscriptions and click Install; or use Devices in the left menu, choose the operating system under Protect more devices, and download from there. In both cases Avira states the existing licence is recognised automatically once the product is installed and signed in. Which is also the reason a reinstall is not a fix for an expiry: the fresh install asks the same question of the same account and gets the same answer.

Deciding to stop paying

This is a legitimate outcome and worth doing properly rather than by neglect. Remove Avira through Settings, Apps, restart, then open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection and under Who’s protecting me? choose Manage providers, and confirm Microsoft Defender Antivirus is turned on. Microsoft documents Defender being re-enabled automatically once the non-Microsoft product is uninstalled or stops providing real-time protection, so in the normal case there is nothing else to do.

What is not a legitimate outcome is leaving an expired product installed and assuming it still counts. It holds the Windows registration while providing nothing, which is the one arrangement that is worse than either alternative.

Before you buy a renewal

  • Check the tier, not just the product name. The gap between tiers is where most renewal mistakes are made.
  • Count the devices you actually want covered, then compare a multi-device subscription against separate ones.
  • Confirm which account you want everything to live on, and buy against that one.
  • Check the region the key is issued for. A key for the wrong region is a slow way to discover this again.

When a licence is the actual fix

If the term really has ended, the licence is the fix and nothing on the machine substitutes for it. The paid components do not come back through a repair, a reinstall or a removal tool, because there is nothing broken to repair. Arco supplies Avira Antivirus Pro and can check which tier actually covers the features you were using, and how many devices your household genuinely needs, before you buy rather than after. If you would rather stop paying, say so plainly and take the free route: remove Avira, confirm Microsoft Defender reports itself as on in Windows Security, and you have real-time protection built into Windows at no cost.

Every code this article covers

Code What it points at Source
Your Avira license has expired No current entitlement covers this installation, so the paid components have switched off and the free tier remains not published by the vendor
507 Seen on a licensing call that returned no entitlement. Avira publishes no meaning for the number, and the fix does not depend on it not published by the vendor
556 Another identifier in the same licensing path, most often after a term ends or a key is applied to the wrong product not published by the vendor
551 Reported where the activation or validation request did not complete. No published meaning; treat it as a connection or account question not published by the vendor

Confirm the fix worked

  1. The app shows a subscription end date in the future rather than an expiry notice.
  2. The features you pay for appear as available rather than locked on the product page.
  3. Your Avira account lists this computer under Devices against the current subscription.
  4. The state survives a restart, rather than reverting once the cached answer refreshes.
  5. On a machine where TLS 1.2 was the cause, the app stays signed in for a day rather than logging itself out.

Questions people ask about this

Will reinstalling Avira restore my features?

No. The entitlement is held by Avira against your account, so a fresh install arrives at exactly the same answer. Avira’s own reinstall instructions say the existing licence is recognised automatically, which cuts both ways. Reinstall only when the product itself is damaged, which produces different symptoms.

I paid. Why does it still say expired?

Almost always because the payment landed on a different account from the one this installation is signed into, or because this device is not attached to the subscription under Devices. Check both before assuming the payment failed.

My licence is valid and the app dropped to the free version anyway.

Avira documents that case: a device that cannot use TLS 1.2 loses the secure connection the app depends on, and the published remedy is to install .NET Framework 4.6.2 or later. It is unlikely on a current Windows release and worth checking on an old one.

Can I buy a key from a reseller instead of renewing directly?

Yes. A genuine key applies to your account in the same way a direct renewal does. Check the product tier and the region before buying.

What happens if I do nothing?

The paid components stay off and the free tier continues, which is a real reduction in what you had. Either renew, or remove Avira and let Microsoft Defender take the machine, which costs nothing. Leaving it undecided is the only option with no upside.
