Fix it now
The three tiers share the same protection core, and Bitdefender now publishes SecurePass, Safepay, Anti-tracker, Ransomware Remediation and the 200 MB per day VPN in all of them. Internet Security adds the firewall, antispam, webcam and microphone protection and Parental Control on Windows. Total Security is the one Bitdefender publishes as covering Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and that is what usually decides it.
- Buy Total Security if the household runs more than one operating system. Bitdefender publishes it at 5 devices across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, and it is the tier the range is built around.
- Buy Internet Security for a Windows-only home that wants Parental Control, the Bitdefender firewall, antispam and webcam and microphone protection.
- Buy Antivirus Plus for one Windows PC where Windows Firewall is left on and nobody needs parental controls.
- Skip the upgrade if you were doing it for the password manager. Bitdefender publishes SecurePass in Antivirus Plus, Internet Security and Total Security alike.
- Skip all three if you want a VPN you can leave running. The standard VPN in every tier is 200 MB per day per device; unlimited traffic is Bitdefender’s separately sold Premium VPN.
- Skip the consumer range entirely for an office. These SKUs have no central console and no server protection.
Bitdefender describes Internet Security as protection on Windows PCs. Antivirus Plus it describes two ways on the same page – as software for Windows PCs, and as a suite covering Windows, macOS, Android and iOS – while listing Windows-only system requirements. If cross-platform cover is the reason you are buying, take Total Security, where the coverage is unambiguous.
If platform coverage decides it, you are done. Below is what Bitdefender publishes in each tier, what the firewall step actually buys you, and where the mobile components stop.
Why it happens
All three tiers publish the same protection core, and it is worth listing because it is more than people assume: Antivirus, Advanced Threat Defense watching process behaviour for zero-day activity, Online Threat Prevention blocking malicious and phishing pages before they load, Ransomware Remediation that can restore files a hostile process encrypted, and a Vulnerability Scan that flags outdated software and weak Windows accounts. Alongside that, every tier carries Safepay, the VPN, SecurePass, Anti-tracker, Profiles and the File Shredder.
That list matters because it removes several of the usual reasons for moving up. The password manager is not a reason: SecurePass is in all three. Safepay is not a reason: the hardened browser for banking is in all three. Ransomware remediation is not a reason either. What is left is a short and specific set of additions, which makes this an unusually easy tier ladder to reason about.
Internet Security is the Windows step. Bitdefender publishes it as all the features of Antivirus Plus plus a firewall, antispam, webcam protection and parental controls, on Windows PCs. Total Security is the platform step: Bitdefender publishes it as everything in Internet Security plus cryptomining protection and extensive optimisation tools on Windows, and as complete anti-malware protection across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, at 5 devices, with Anti-Theft in the utilities list.
The house has phones, a tablet and a Mac as well as a PC
You have this one if You are protecting one machine properly while three or four other devices carry nothing.
- Total Security. Bitdefender publishes it as covering Windows, macOS, Android and iOS on a 5-device subscription.
- Do not count an iPhone as the device that justifies the upgrade. Apple does not permit conventional scanning, so the iOS component is web and network protection rather than an antivirus in the usual sense – true of every vendor, not a Bitdefender limitation.
- Anti-Theft is in the Total Security utilities list and is the practical reason to install the Android client.
You want to see what your machine is talking to
You have this one if Windows Firewall is on and doing its job, but nothing tells you when an unfamiliar process reaches out.
- Internet Security is the tier that adds the Bitdefender firewall, alongside antispam and Video & Audio Protection.
- For most homes behind a router doing network address translation this is visibility rather than a new defence, because unsolicited inbound traffic is already dropped at the router.
- Buy it for the outbound view and the parental controls together, not for the belief that Windows was previously unprotected.
You bought a tier expecting an unlimited VPN
You have this one if The VPN client keeps stopping partway through the day.
- That is the published behaviour, not a fault. Bitdefender’s standard VPN is 200 MB of encrypted traffic per day, per device.
- Unlimited traffic and free choice of server location is Bitdefender Premium VPN, sold separately or inside a higher bundle.
- If a full-time tunnel is the point of the purchase, price that separately rather than moving up a consumer tier and hoping.
One further point on the smaller tier. Bitdefender’s own support page for Antivirus Plus opens by describing it as both a Windows PC product and a suite delivering protection across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, then lists Windows-only system requirements underneath. That is the vendor being ambiguous rather than this article hedging, and the practical answer is the same either way: if multi-platform cover is why you are buying, Total Security is where Bitdefender states it plainly.

Bitdefender reshuffles its consumer range periodically and sells tiers above Total Security as well. Read the feature list on the SKU in front of you rather than an older comparison chart, and check specifically what the VPN allowance says, because that is the row people most often get wrong.
Is the firewall step worth it?
Windows Firewall is a competent packet filter and it is on by default. What it does not do well is outbound application control in a form a non-specialist can drive: telling you that an unfamiliar process has just tried to reach the internet and letting you decide in one click. That is what Internet Security adds, along with antispam for desktop mail clients and Video & Audio Protection for the camera and microphone.
For a household behind a consumer router, unsolicited inbound traffic is already dropped before it reaches the machine, so treat this as visibility and convenience rather than a new wall. The stronger reason to take Internet Security on a Windows-only household is Parental Control, which is a capability rather than a convenience and which the tier below does not have at all.
Where the mobile components stop
The Android client does real work: malware scanning, web protection and the Anti-Theft tools that let you locate or wipe a lost device. The iOS component is necessarily thinner, because Apple does not permit conventional file scanning, so it is web protection and network checks. That is true of every vendor in this market. Count the Android phones as full seats and the iPhones as partial ones, and the Total Security upgrade still usually pays for itself in a mixed household.
Which tier, by situation
- One Windows PC, no children, router firewall in place: Antivirus Plus. Anything more is capability you will not open.
- Windows-only household with children: Internet Security, for Parental Control and the outbound firewall view.
- Any household mixing Windows, macOS and Android: Total Security. This is what the tier exists for.
- You want an unlimited VPN in the same subscription: none of these three. Bitdefender sells that as Premium VPN.
- You are protecting a small office: the consumer range is the wrong shape. Ask about the business products, which have a console and server protection.
Before you buy
- Count the devices in the house, not the PCs. The phones are usually what makes Total Security the cheaper answer per device.
- Check whether anyone needs Parental Control, because that is the one capability that is genuinely absent from the bottom tier.
- Decide about the VPN separately. A 200 MB daily allowance is a banking session on hotel Wi-Fi, not a tunnel you leave on.
- Read the SKU’s own feature list before paying. Bitdefender’s packaging changes more often than its protection does.
When a licence is the actual fix
Bitdefender Total Security is the subscription that ends the mismatch between what you bought and what you own. If Antivirus Plus is running on a laptop while three phones and a Mac in the same house carry nothing, that is a coverage gap rather than a configuration problem, and the fix is the multi-platform tier rather than another Windows-only product. Bitdefender publishes Total Security at 5 devices across Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, with cryptomining protection, Anti-Theft and the optimisation tools on top of everything Internet Security carries. Arco supplies Bitdefender Total Security and can check the device count on the SKU against the number of devices you actually need to cover. If an unlimited VPN is part of what you are buying, we will price Bitdefender Premium VPN alongside it rather than letting you discover the 200 MB daily allowance after the fact.
Questions people ask about this
Does Total Security detect more than Antivirus Plus?
No. Antivirus, Advanced Threat Defense, Online Threat Prevention, Ransomware Remediation and the Vulnerability Scan are published in all three tiers. You are paying for platform coverage, the firewall, Parental Control, Anti-Theft and the optimisation tools.
Is the included VPN good enough to replace a paid VPN?
No, and Bitdefender does not sell it as one. The standard VPN included with its products is 200 MB of encrypted traffic per day per device. Unlimited traffic and a free choice of server is Bitdefender Premium VPN, which is a separate purchase.
Do I still need Windows Firewall if I buy Internet Security?
Bitdefender’s firewall takes over that role, which is normal and correct. Do not try to run two firewalls actively. If you uninstall Bitdefender later, confirm Windows Firewall has switched itself back on before you assume the machine is covered.
Can one subscription cover devices in two different houses?
Yes. The subscription counts devices, not addresses, so covering a family member living elsewhere is fine as long as you stay inside the device count and each installation is signed in to your account.
Is Antivirus Plus Windows-only or not?
Bitdefender’s own page says both things: it describes Antivirus Plus as software for Windows PCs and as a suite covering Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, while listing only Windows system requirements. If cross-platform coverage is what you are buying, take Total Security, where Bitdefender states the coverage without ambiguity.
