Bitdefender Premium Security Review: Unlimited VPN Changes the Maths

9 min read Updated October 4, 2026 Antivirus Reviews

Fix it now

Bitdefender Premium Security is Total Security with unlimited VPN traffic and a privacy layer on top. It does not add devices and it does not add the password manager, because Bitdefender publishes both of those on Total Security already, so this is a VPN decision wearing an antivirus badge.

  1. Buy it if you want a VPN you will leave running and would rather hold one subscription than two.
  2. Buy it if Scam Protection Pro, email protection and a system-wide ad blocker and anti-tracker are things you would use.
  3. Skip it if you already pay for a VPN you chose deliberately. You would be buying a second one and using neither well.
  4. Skip it if you thought it came with more seats. Bitdefender publishes five devices on Individual and twenty-five across five accounts on Family for both Total Security and Premium Security.
  5. Skip it if you thought the password manager started here. Bitdefender publishes the Password Manager on Total Security Individual.
  6. Skip it if you want a VPN chosen on its own merits, with a published audit history you have read yourself.

Nothing in the detection stack changes between Total Security and Premium Security. If you are upgrading for protection, there is none to find.

If that settles it you can stop here. If you want the comparison against buying a VPN separately, read on.

Why it happens

The clean way to think about this tier is to ask what actually changes. Bitdefender publishes Premium Security with unlimited VPN traffic and a choice of over three thousand VPN servers in more than a hundred countries, along with the password manager, Scam Protection Pro, email protection, cryptomining protection, data breach detection and a system-wide ad blocker and anti-tracker. Set that against Total Security, which already publishes the Password Manager on its Individual plan, cryptomining protection, data breach detection and the same 200 MB per day per device VPN allowance, and the genuine additions are the unlimited VPN and the privacy layer.

The seat count does not move. Bitdefender publishes the same numbers on both tiers: Individual is one account and five devices, Family is five accounts and twenty-five devices. If you have read that Premium comes with more seats, that is not what Bitdefender publishes, and a household that has outgrown Total Security will not solve it by moving up. It solves it by moving from Individual to Family, on either tier.

So this is a VPN purchase, and it deserves to be judged as one. For the things most people want a VPN for, a bundled one from a company you already pay is a sound choice and the integration is genuinely convenient: one app, one login, one renewal. Public networks you do not trust, keeping browsing away from an internet provider that sells behavioural data, reaching a service that expects you to be somewhere else. For those uses, unlimited traffic and a wide spread of country locations is enough, and Bitdefender publishes both.

It is a weaker choice if your requirements are stricter. If you care about a published audit history, a particular jurisdiction, port forwarding, or running a tunnel on a router, buy from a provider whose entire business is VPNs and keep your antivirus separate. We are not going to tell you who operates Bitdefender’s VPN infrastructure or whether the client offers a kill switch or split tunnelling at this tier, because Bitdefender does not publish either on the product page. If those features decide your purchase, get them confirmed against the product you are ordering.

The privacy layer is the part that gets overlooked and is worth more than it looks. Scam Protection Pro, email protection and a system-wide ad blocker and anti-tracker address the thing that actually reaches households now, which is a convincing message rather than an exotic binary. A system-wide blocker is also a different proposition from a browser extension, because it is not limited to the browsers someone remembered to install it in.

What has not changed is the protection. Antivirus, ransomware protection, Advanced Threat Defense, network threat prevention and the rest are published from the entry tier upwards. Nobody moving from Total Security to Premium Security gets a better scanner, and Bitdefender does not suggest otherwise.

Full reference

What actually changes at this tier

Total Security Premium Security
Devices on Individual 5 5
Devices on Family 25 across 5 accounts 25 across 5 accounts
Detection stack Published from Antivirus Plus upwards Unchanged
Password Manager Included on Individual Included
Privacy Firewall Included Included
Cryptomining Protection and data breach detection Included Included
VPN traffic 200 MB per day per device Unlimited
VPN network Not published at this tier 3000+ servers in 100+ countries
Scam Protection Pro, email protection Not published at this tier Included
System-wide ad blocker and anti-tracker Not published at this tier Included

Two rows carry the whole decision: VPN traffic and the privacy layer. Everything else is either identical or already in the tier below.

Premium against Total Security plus a separate VPN

Dimension Premium Security Total Security plus a separate VPN
Subscriptions to manage One Two, with two renewal dates
Choice of VPN provider Fixed Yours, chosen on audits, jurisdiction and features
Advanced VPN features Not published on the product page; ask before relying on any Whatever your chosen provider documents
Password manager Included, and also included one tier down Included one tier down either way
Device seats 5 on Individual, 25 on Family Same for the antivirus; the VPN has its own count
Support One vendor Two, and each may point at the other

That table decides it for most people. If you have no VPN and want one, bundling is simpler and usually cheaper. If you chose a VPN deliberately, Premium is paying twice for one function and Total Security is the better buy.

Running a bundled VPN alongside the suite

The components are built to coexist, which is not always true when a VPN and a security suite come from different vendors: the tunnel does not confuse the firewall and web filtering keeps working with the VPN active. Expect the ordinary VPN trade-offs rather than any Bitdefender-specific ones. Some latency. Streaming services that refuse a connection, unpredictably and by week. A need to switch the tunnel off or route around it when playing online. None of that is a defect and all of it applies to every provider.

Seats, terms and renewal

Seats are counted per installed device and released from Bitdefender Central when you remove one. Terms carry automatic renewal unless you turn it off, and the joining price is promotional. If you buy fresh keys each year rather than renewing, note that you are re-buying the VPN each year too, which is a fair point of comparison against a standalone provider whose renewal terms may work differently.

Questions to settle before you order

  • Would you actually leave a VPN running, or switch it on twice a year? That is the whole decision.
  • Do you already hold a VPN subscription, including one bundled with something else you pay for?
  • Do you need a kill switch, split tunnelling or a specific jurisdiction? Get those confirmed rather than assumed.
  • Are you moving up hoping for more devices? You will not get any. Move from Individual to Family instead.
  • Are you moving up for the password manager? It is already on Total Security Individual.

When a licence is the actual fix

Bitdefender Premium Security makes sense for a specific buyer: someone who wants a VPN, does not have one, has no strong opinions about which, and would like it to arrive under the same login as the antivirus. Arco supplies Bitdefender consumer licences and will do the arithmetic rather than the brochure. Tell us how many devices you cover and whether you already pay for a VPN. If you do, Total Security is usually the better buy and we will say so. And if you are moving up expecting more seats or a password manager, we will tell you that Bitdefender publishes the same device counts on both tiers and the Password Manager on Total Security Individual.

Questions people ask about this

Is the bundled VPN unlimited?

Yes. Bitdefender publishes unlimited VPN traffic on Premium Security, along with a choice of over three thousand servers in more than a hundred countries. That is the substantive difference from the 200 MB per day per device allowance on the tiers below.

Does Premium come with more devices than Total Security?

No. Bitdefender publishes the same counts on both: one account and five devices on Individual, five accounts and twenty-five devices on Family. If seats are your problem, the answer is the Family plan rather than a higher tier.

Do I get the password manager by moving up?

You already had it. Bitdefender publishes the Password Manager on Total Security Individual, so it is not something Premium Security adds. What it adds is the unlimited VPN and the privacy layer.

Does Premium detect more than Total Security?

No. The protection stack is published from Antivirus Plus upwards and does not change as you move up the range. You are buying the VPN and the privacy tools.

Does the VPN have a kill switch or split tunnelling?

Bitdefender does not publish either on the Premium Security product page, so we are not going to tell you it does. If your purchase depends on one of them, ask for confirmation against the specific product before you order rather than relying on a review.
