Fix it now
McAfee now presents its consumer range as McAfee+ Individual and Family plans with McAfee Total Protection sold alongside them as basic device and identity protection for individuals. The security core is common to all of it, so choosing between Total Protection and a McAfee+ tier is a choice about services and device counts rather than about detection.
- Buy it if you want a straightforward suite for a small number of devices and none of the identity services McAfee attaches to the McAfee+ plans.
- Buy a McAfee+ plan instead if you have a lot of devices. McAfee publishes McAfee Essential at 5 devices and McAfee+ Premium, Advanced and Ultimate as unlimited.
- Skip it if you want to tune a firewall, read detailed logs or control components individually. The interface is built to make those decisions for you.
- Skip it if it merely arrived preinstalled on a new laptop. That is a trial, not a decision, and leaving it to convert is how people become customers by accident.
- Skip it if you are looking for business cover. McAfee’s product menus list consumer lines only, and its small business pages are not reachable.
- Read the plan terms before you buy, particularly around the VPN and automatic renewal. Get any condition that matters to you confirmed in writing rather than inferred from a review.
We are not printing a lab score, a detection percentage or a boot-time figure anywhere in this article. Mainstream engines cluster closely on commodity malware and any number quoted for a single round describes that round, not the product you would install.
If the device count and the absence of identity services suit you, that is the decision. Below is how the range is laid out, what is genuinely common to every tier, and what to check before paying.
Why it happens
McAfee’s range is now organised around McAfee+ plans, with Total Protection continuing alongside them and described by McAfee as basic device and identity protection for individuals. The security core is common across the line-up. What separates the plans is device count and the identity and privacy services layered on top, so the comparison worth making is not between engines but between how many devices you need and how much monitoring you want.
The device counts are the clearest published difference. McAfee lists McAfee Essential at 5 devices and McAfee+ Premium, Advanced and Ultimate as covering unlimited devices. That unlimited figure is the strongest thing on McAfee’s card and it is what makes the range attractive to a household that has passed five devices without noticing. At the single-device end it is much less interesting, because you are paying suite prices for a scanner.
One piece of context helps when reading anything about this brand. McAfee’s own product navigation today lists antivirus, Scam Detector, VPN, Mobile Security, PC Optimizer and McAfee Assist – consumer lines, with no business product line in the product menus at all. If you arrived expecting corporate management heritage to show up in a household product, it will not, and if you arrived looking for a business SKU, McAfee is not currently presenting one.
You have more devices than you can count on one hand
You have this one if Two adults, teenagers, phones, tablets, a laptop each and the machine in the spare room.
- This is where the range is strongest. McAfee publishes McAfee+ Premium, Advanced and Ultimate as unlimited devices.
- McAfee Essential is 5 devices, which is the figure to compare against before you assume you need a bigger plan.
- Households pass five without noticing. Count honestly, including the machine nobody uses but everybody logs into.
It arrived on a new laptop
You have this one if There is a McAfee icon in the tray you did not install and a countdown you have been ignoring.
- A manufacturer’s trial is a trial. Decide deliberately: configure it as your suite, or remove it properly and use something else.
- If you remove it and prompts or components persist afterwards, ask McAfee support for its removal tool rather than deleting files by hand.
- Windows steps its own real-time protection aside while a third-party product is registered, so removing McAfee cleanly restores Microsoft Defender rather than leaving you unprotected.
You want to configure the firewall yourself
You have this one if You are used to writing outbound rules and reading logs, and the interface will not let you.
- This is not the product for you, and that is a design decision rather than a shortcoming.
- The interface is built to make decisions on your behalf. That suits people who will not configure anything and irritates people who will.
- If control is what you want, buy a suite that publishes per-application rules, or use the Windows firewall, which does more than most people think.
One habit matters more than the tier you choose, and it applies to every vendor that works this way. Web and phishing protection is delivered through a browser extension. If you decline the extension prompts or use a browser it does not support, you keep the file scanner and lose a large part of the layer that protects you from the attack you are most likely to meet. Check that it is installed and enabled in the browser you actually use, on the day you install the product, and then check it again after a browser update.

How the range is laid out
These are the plan names and device counts McAfee publishes. Treat the identity rows as the reason to move up, because the security core does not change.
| Plan | Devices McAfee publishes | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| McAfee Total Protection | Not published as a device table on its own page | Basic device and identity protection for individuals |
| McAfee Essential | 5 | The budget entry, with core protection, VPN, web protection and identity monitoring |
| McAfee+ Premium | Unlimited | Adds the full identity and privacy block including credit monitoring and identity theft coverage |
| McAfee+ Advanced | Unlimited | As Premium, with personal info and online account removal rather than scans |
| McAfee+ Ultimate | Unlimited | As Advanced, with higher identity theft coverage and expanded transaction monitoring |
| McAfee+ Family plans | Unlimited | Extends the plan to several family members |
McAfee’s Total Protection page does not expose a device-count table, so if the number of seats is the deciding factor, get it in writing from the storefront you are buying from rather than from any review, including this one.
What every tier has in common
| Component | What to know |
|---|---|
| Antivirus and ransomware protection | The core, and the same across the range |
| Firewall | Included and deliberately simple. Not for people who want rules |
| Web and phishing protection | Delivered by the browser extension. No extension, no protection |
| Password manager | Included across the range |
| Secure VPN | Included on the current plans. Read the plan terms for any condition attached to it |
| Scam Detector | A named feature on the current plans |
| Identity monitoring | Present from McAfee Essential upward, deepening with the tier |
| File shredder and clean-up tools | Windows tools by nature |
The heaviness question, answered honestly
McAfee’s reputation for weighing a machine down was earned a long time ago and the current client is not that product. What we will not do is replace an old myth with a new number: no published measurement exists that would describe your hardware, and a timing taken on ours would not describe yours. What is fair to say is that a full scan is heavy on every product on the market, that you should schedule it for a time you are not at the machine, and that if your memory of McAfee is a system that took a minute to become usable after signing in, that memory describes a client you would not recognise today.
The friction that remains is interface noise rather than processor time. The product surfaces prompts and promotions, particularly where it arrived as a manufacturer’s trial, and that is why people abandon subscriptions that were doing their job. Spend ten minutes in the settings after installing it.
What to confirm before you pay
- The device count on the specific plan in front of you, because McAfee does not publish one for Total Protection on its own page.
- Any condition attached to the VPN, including whether automatic renewal must remain enabled. Get it in writing – it is the sort of term that changes a buying decision and it is not published where we could reach it.
- Whether Scam Detector supports your language and market. If most of the fraudulent messages you receive are not in English, confirm before treating the feature as a reason to buy.
- Which identity features are listed as included on the plan sheet for the country you are buying in, rather than described in general marketing.
- The renewal price and date. Joining prices are introductory across this market and the second year is a separate decision.
When a licence is the actual fix
McAfee Total Protection is the right purchase for someone who wants a competent suite, will not configure anything, and does not want the identity services the McAfee+ plans are built around. Arco supplies McAfee licences and will match the plan to your device count rather than to the largest box on the shelf – if five devices covers you, McAfee Essential is published at 5 and we will quote that rather than an unlimited plan you cannot fill. If a manufacturer’s trial is about to convert on a new machine, tell us and we will work out whether continuing or replacing it makes more sense. And we will get the VPN’s terms confirmed in writing before you buy rather than after, because that is exactly the sort of condition that should not be discovered at renewal.
Questions people ask about this
Is McAfee still slow?
Not in the way it once was. What we will not do is give you a number: no published measurement would describe your hardware, and one taken on ours would not either. Schedule the full scan for a time you are away from the machine, as you should with any product, and judge the rest on how the interface behaves rather than on a decade-old reputation.
Do I have to keep automatic renewal on to use the VPN?
We could not find a McAfee page that publishes that condition, so we are not going to state it as fact – which is exactly why you should ask before you buy. If you intend to turn automatic renewal off and buy a fresh licence each year, get written confirmation of what that does to the VPN, because it is the kind of term that changes which plan is right for you.
How do I remove the trial that came with my laptop?
Uninstall it through Windows in the normal way. If components or notifications persist afterwards, ask McAfee support for its removal tool rather than deleting files by hand. Once it is gone, Windows restores its own real-time protection, so you are not left unprotected while you decide what to install instead.
Is the unlimited-device plan worth it over a five-device one?
Count your devices honestly, including phones, tablets and the machine in the spare room. McAfee publishes McAfee Essential at 5 devices and Premium, Advanced and Ultimate as unlimited. Households pass five without noticing, and at that point the larger plan usually beats a second subscription. Below five it is capacity you will not use.
Does McAfee sell a business version?
Not one we can point you at. McAfee’s product menus list consumer lines only, and its small business pages return errors. If you are protecting company machines, look at a vendor that publishes a current business range, or at Defender for Business if you already hold Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
