Fix It Now

Fix it now

Microsoft publishes 0xC004F050 as “the product key is invalid”, and names three checks: the key must be the right one for the product being activated, the characters must have been entered correctly, and an em dash pasted in place of a hyphen will fail. This is about the twenty-five characters and the build they are being offered to, not your network.

Run these in an elevated Command Prompt. Use the Program Files (x86) path for 32-bit Office

cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act
  1. Read the installed product first: open Word, choose File, then Account, then About, and note the product name and version.
  2. Read the licence name in the /dstatus output. It tells you which channel this installation expects, and a volume key offered to a retail build is refused here.
  3. Retype the key into a plain text editor before you paste it, and check the separators. Microsoft names an em dash pasted in place of a hyphen as a cause of this code.
  4. If it is refused again, the key and the installed product do not correspond. Deploy the build the key belongs to rather than looking for a command that forces it.

Firewall changes, proxy exclusions and DNS work have no effect here. The key is decoded locally and refused before an activation request is ever sent.

If activation completes you are done. If not, the next section explains what the licensing service checked and why the same key works elsewhere.

Why it happens

A product key is not a password checked against a list. It is a structured value that decodes to a product identifier describing the edition, the version and the channel it belongs to, and the licensing service can read that locally. If the identifier does not correspond to something the installed Office can be licensed as, the key is refused immediately and no activation request leaves the machine.

That local check explains two things people find baffling. It explains why the error appears instantly, with no pause for a network round trip, and it explains why every network remedy fails against it. It also explains the single most common shape of this problem in organisations: a key from a volume agreement being typed into a build downloaded from a consumer page.

Microsoft’s own guidance for this code is short and concrete. Make sure the key corresponds to the product being activated. Make sure the characters were entered correctly. And check for an em dash where a hyphen should be, which is what a word processor or a chat client silently does to a key someone pasted in. There is no published rule about which letters and digits appear in a key, so ignore any article that gives you a forbidden character list.

The four companion codes have no published descriptions at all. 0xC004F010, 0xC004F078, 0xC004C007 and 0xC004C010 come from the same area and are routinely glossed with meanings the vendor has never stated. Microsoft does publish 0xC004C001, “the activation server determined the specified product key is invalid”, which is the documented server-side refusal in this family and a useful thing to be able to tell apart from a local one.

The key is for a different product than the one installed

You have this one if The key was issued for one Office version or edition, and File, Account, About names another.

  1. Read the installed product name and version from File, Account, About.
  2. Compare it with what the key was sold as. Version and edition both have to match.
  3. Check the product ID your deployment used. Microsoft states that if you use the wrong product ID, you cannot activate Office.
  4. Deploy the product the key covers, or obtain a key for the product installed. No command reconciles a mismatch.

A volume key is being offered to a retail build, or the reverse

You have this one if /dstatus names a retail channel while the key came from a volume agreement, or vice versa.

  1. Uninstall the current build.
  2. Redeploy with the Office Deployment Tool using the product ID that matches your licence: ProPlus2024Volume or Standard2024Volume for volume, ProPlus2024Retail or HomeBusiness2024Retail for retail, and the 2021 equivalents for that release.
  3. Volume LTSC releases also need their own update channel, PerpetualVL2024 or PerpetualVL2021.
  4. Install the key with /inpkey: and activate with /act, or set a KMS host first with /sethst:.

This is the single most common cause in organisations that buy volume licences and then let users install Office from a consumer download.

The key was mistyped, or its separators were mangled

You have this one if The key came from a photograph, a scan, a chat message or a document, and the refusal is instant.

  1. Paste it into a plain text editor so you can see all twenty-five characters and the four separators at once.
  2. Replace any em dash with a plain hyphen. Microsoft names this specifically for this code.
  3. Check for a non-breaking space or a typographic quote that a word processor substituted.
  4. Install it with /inpkey: and activate.

The key was already redeemed into a Microsoft account

You have this one if A retail purchase that was redeemed once at setup; typing it into the application now achieves nothing.

  1. Sign in to the account the key was redeemed with and install Office from the services and subscriptions area.
  2. Do not re-enter the key in the application. A redeemed retail Office licence lives in the account.
  3. If the account is inaccessible, recover it first. The key will not activate again by itself.

An older key is installed and in the way

You have this one if /dstatus lists more than one licence, or a previous key that is not the one you want to use.

  1. List what is installed with /dstatus and note the last five characters of each key.
  2. Remove the unwanted one: cscript ospp.vbs /unpkey:<last five>.
  3. Install the correct key and activate.
  4. Re-run /dstatus and confirm only the intended licence remains.

Which product ID belongs to which licence

Licence you hold Product ID to deploy Update channel
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024, volume ProPlus2024Volume PerpetualVL2024
Office LTSC Standard 2024, volume Standard2024Volume PerpetualVL2024
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2021, volume ProPlus2021Volume PerpetualVL2021
Office LTSC Standard 2021, volume Standard2021Volume PerpetualVL2021
Office Professional Plus 2024, retail ProPlus2024Retail The retail default
Office Home and Business 2024, retail HomeBusiness2024Retail The retail default

Microsoft’s own line on that table is worth quoting to whoever built the deployment: if you use the wrong product ID, you cannot activate Office. The applications look identical once installed, which is why this goes unnoticed until a key is refused.

Volume installations already carry a key

By default, volume licensed versions of Office are installed with a Generic Volume License Key, and that key exists to make the installation find and activate against a KMS host or Active Directory rather than to be typed in by hand. Each edition has its own. If /dstatus shows a GVLK-based licence and you are trying to type a different volume key over it, check first whether the machine is meant to activate against infrastructure you already run.

Local refusal against server refusal

Code Where the decision was made Published?
0xC004F050 On the machine, by the licensing service Yes: the product key is invalid
0xC004C001 At the activation server Yes: the activation server determined the specified product key is invalid
0xC004F010 Not established No published description
0xC004F078 Not established No published description
0xC004C007 The 0xC004C prefix places it in the activation-server family No published description
0xC004C010 Same family No published description

The distinction is practical. A local refusal is answered by changing the key or the build. A server refusal is answered by the channel the key came from, and no local change moves it. To read the vendor’s own text for any of these on the machine in front of you, run cscript ospp.vbs /ddescr: with the code.

Before you conclude the key is bad

  1. Confirm the installed product name and version from File, Account, About, not from what you think was deployed.
  2. Confirm the bitness, because the ospp.vbs path differs and running it from the wrong folder produces output about nothing.
  3. Confirm the channel from the licence name in /dstatus.
  4. Remove any leftover key with /unpkey: so you are testing one thing at a time.
  5. Only then decide whether the problem is the key or the build.

When several Office versions are installed

Two Office generations on one machine each need their own licence and their own key, and they do not share. A key installed while both are present can bind to the one you did not mean, and the symptom is a key that reports as installed while the application you actually use stays unlicensed. Remove the versions you are not licensing, confirm with /dstatus that only the intended installation remains, then install the key.

When a licence is the actual fix

Sometimes the honest answer is that the key does not correspond to anything you can legitimately install. That happens most often with keys bought cheaply from marketplace sellers, issued for a channel or edition the buyer was never told about. If that is your situation, the fix is a key matching the Office you want to run. Office 2024 Home & Business is the usual choice for a single machine needing the core applications on a perpetual licence rather than a subscription. Arco supplies it, and can tell you from the product name in your About dialogue which key will install without argument, which beats testing keys one at a time.

Every code this article covers

Code What it points at Source
0xC004F050 The product key is invalid. Microsoft’s checks are that the key matches the product, that the characters were entered correctly, and that an em dash has not replaced a hyphen Microsoft Learn
0xC004F010 Returned from the same part of the licensing service. No published description not published by the vendor
0xC004F078 Same family, no published description not published by the vendor
0xC004C007 In the activation-server code family. No published description. The documented refusal in that family is 0xC004C001 not published by the vendor
0xC004C010 Same family, no published description not published by the vendor

Confirm the fix worked

  1. cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus lists exactly one licence and reports it as licensed.
  2. The licence name matches the edition shown in File, Account, About.
  3. An Office application opens with no Unlicensed Product wording in the title bar.
  4. The product ID used to deploy matches the licence you hold.
  5. Reboot and re-check, since an activation that has not committed shows itself on the next start.

Questions people ask about this

Can a key be converted from one edition to another?

No. The edition is encoded in the key. Deploy the edition the key covers, which is faster than obtaining a replacement key and is usually what the licence you bought actually entitles you to.

Why does the same key work on a colleague’s machine?

Almost always because a different build was installed. Compare the product name in File, Account, About on both machines, and compare the product IDs used to deploy them.

Is a rejected key always a bad key?

No. Far more often it is a good key facing the wrong installation. Establish the installed product and channel before questioning the key itself.

Is there really a forbidden character list for Microsoft keys?

Microsoft does not publish one. What it does publish for this code is to check the characters were entered correctly and to look for an em dash where a hyphen belongs. Treat any list of banned letters and digits as unsourced.

I bought a very cheap key online and it is rejected. What now?

Open a refund request through the marketplace. A key that fails a local structural check was never going to activate, and no local repair changes that. If you need Office working, buy through a channel that will tell you what you are getting.
