Fix it now
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is the volume-licensed, feature-frozen Office: Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, with Skype for Business as an optional install. It is deployed with the Office Deployment Tool on the PerpetualVL2024 channel and activated with KMS, Active Directory-based activation or MAK. Buy it for devices that must not change.
- Buy it for air-gapped, regulated or validated machines where a feature change is a compliance event rather than an improvement.
- Buy it where Access is needed on those devices, and put the cheaper LTSC Standard 2024 on everything else in the same estate.
- Buy it where activation has to work without the internet, which is Microsoft’s own recommendation for machines that are completely cut off.
- Skip it for ordinary knowledge workers. The suite has no Copilot, no co-authoring and none of the cloud-backed features, and that is deliberate.
- Skip it on a machine that needs Microsoft 365 Apps as well, because two full Office suites of the same version on one device is not supported.
- Check the session hosts before you count licences. Office on a shared session host normally wants Microsoft 365 Apps with shared computer activation instead.
Publisher is not in this release, Teams is not preinstalled, and support ends on 9 October 2029 with no extended phase.
If that decides it you can stop here. What follows is the deployment and activation detail, the exact app list, and the two situations where the device-based licence changes the arithmetic.
Why it happens
The premise of the long-term servicing channel is stability. One feature set for the life of the release, security updates only, and nothing arriving unannounced to change how an application behaves. On a system that has been qualified, validated or written into a standard operating procedure, that is worth more than any feature Microsoft could ship, because every change costs a revalidation.
Microsoft is explicit about what the trade costs you. Office LTSC 2024 does not include the cloud-backed features of Microsoft 365 Apps, which means no real-time collaboration, no AI-driven automation and none of the hybrid-work security and compliance tooling. Teams is not preinstalled and is a separate download. Publisher is gone from the suite entirely, ahead of its October 2026 end of life, and the Publish to Power BI feature has been removed from Excel. In a segmented network those absences are the reason to choose it: there is simply less outbound behaviour to explain to a security review.
The app list is short and worth quoting rather than assuming. Professional Plus 2024 includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, and Skype for Business is available as an optional install during setup. Standard 2024 is the same list without Access, and without the optional Skype for Business install. On macOS the volume product is Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024, and there is no Professional Plus equivalent there, because Access has never existed on the Mac.
Deployment is not an installer you click through. The Office Deployment Tool reads a configuration XML that names the product – ProPlus2024Volume for this suite – the applications to exclude, the language, and the update channel, which is PerpetualVL2024. You run the tool once to download the source to a share and again to install from it, which is what makes a genuinely offline rollout straightforward and repeatable.
Activation uses volume methods rather than sign-in. An existing KMS host can serve Office once the LTSC 2024 host key pack is installed, with the usual threshold of five clients before it will start responding and a maximum count of ten. Active Directory-based activation covers domain-joined machines with no host to maintain. Genuinely isolated devices take a MAK key applied per machine. Confirm the result on a client with the ospp.vbs script in the Office program folder, run through cscript. Microsoft’s own guidance points at exactly this arrangement for computers that cannot reach the internet, because subscription Microsoft 365 Apps enters reduced functionality mode after 30 days offline.
The support window is the other half of the decision. Office LTSC 2024 leaves support on 9 October 2029, five years rather than the ten that older perpetual releases enjoyed, and the same date ends its supported connectivity to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online and SharePoint Online. That is a fair trade on a validated instrument PC and a poor one on a laptop belonging to somebody who has to work with the rest of the world.

Deployment, in the order you will actually do it
| Task | How it is done |
|---|---|
| Download the source once for offline installs | Office Deployment Tool with a configuration XML, run in download mode |
| Name the product | Product ID ProPlus2024Volume for Professional Plus, Standard2024Volume for Standard |
| Set the servicing channel | Channel=”PerpetualVL2024″ in the configuration file |
| Exclude applications you do not want | ExcludeApp entries in the same configuration |
| Remove a previous Office install | RemoveMSI or the removal options in the deployment configuration |
| Activate domain-joined devices | Active Directory-based activation, or a KMS host with the Office LTSC 2024 host key pack |
| Activate isolated devices | A MAK key applied to each machine |
| Check the result on a client | cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus in the Office program folder |
ospp.vbs is for volume-licensed Office. It does not work against Microsoft 365 Apps, where Microsoft’s diagnostic script is vnextdiag.ps1 instead.
What KMS actually requires
- The count must reach five before the host will activate Office clients, and the maximum count the host tracks is double that, so ten.
- The host needs the Office LTSC 2024 volume licence pack installed; an older pack will not activate 2024 clients.
- Active Directory-based activation removes the count question entirely for domain-joined machines and is usually the lower-maintenance choice.
- MAK is the right answer for a handful of machines that will never see the domain, and each activation consumes a seat on the key.
Coexistence rules that catch deployments out
| Combination on one machine | Supported |
|---|---|
| Office LTSC 2024 and Microsoft 365 Apps | No. Two full suites of the same version cannot be installed together |
| Microsoft 365 Apps with Visio LTSC 2024 or Project 2024 | Yes, with Microsoft 365 Apps version 2408 or later |
| Office LTSC 2024 with Visio LTSC 2024 and Project 2024 | Yes, same version and same installation technology |
| Office LTSC 2024 alongside an older MSI-based Office | No. Remove the earlier installation as part of the deployment |
Two situations where the licensing model changes the answer
The first is the session host. These suites are licensed to devices, and Microsoft’s volume comparison lists terminal services rights for them, but on a session host the practical question is how many devices reach the server rather than how many servers you have. For shared session hosts and non-persistent virtual desktops the supported subscription mechanism is shared computer activation, and it is worth knowing exactly which plans carry it: any plan that includes Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise, any plan that includes the desktop Visio or Project applications, and Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Microsoft 365 Apps for business and Business Standard do not include it.
The second is the mixed estate. Nothing requires a single suite everywhere. Professional Plus goes on the machines whose users design Access databases; Standard covers the rest at a lower price; both install from the same downloaded source with different configuration files. Reviewing that split once a year is the cheapest licensing exercise available to most organisations.
Planning the end of the release
- Diary 9 October 2029 as a replacement deadline, not a soft target. There is no extended support phase behind it.
- The same date governs supported connectivity to Microsoft 365 services for this generation, so a machine on LTSC 2024 talking to Exchange Online is supported until then and not afterwards.
- If you still have Office LTSC 2021 anywhere, its connectivity to Microsoft 365 services ends on 13 October 2026, which is the more urgent of the two dates.
- Upgrade and downgrade rights live in your volume licensing agreement rather than in the software. Confirm what your agreement gives you before assuming the next release is covered.
When a licence is the actual fix
If you are deploying to devices that must stay unchanged, Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is the correct licence and no subscription product will make the same promise. Arco supplies it, and the questions worth settling before you order are how many of those devices genuinely need Access, since Office LTSC Standard 2024 covers the rest for less, and whether any of the targets are session hosts, where the device-based model and shared computer activation change the arithmetic completely. Give us the device count, the activation method you already run and whether Access is in the picture, and we will confirm the SKU mix rather than selling you one suite for everything.
Questions people ask about this
Does LTSC 2024 include Copilot or any cloud features?
No, and Microsoft says so directly: Office LTSC 2024 does not include the cloud-backed features available in Microsoft 365 Apps, so there is no real-time collaboration, no AI-driven automation and none of the hybrid-work security tooling. If users need those, they need Microsoft 365 Apps instead.
How long is it supported?
Support ends on 9 October 2029, five years from release, with no extended phase. That date also ends supported connectivity to Microsoft 365 services such as Exchange Online for this generation, so plan the replacement from it rather than from the day the machine was built.
Can I install it next to Microsoft 365 Apps?
No. They are the same version and both are full Office suites, so they cannot be installed together on one computer. Remove the existing installation as part of the deployment configuration. Visio LTSC 2024 and Project 2024 are different: those can sit alongside Microsoft 365 Apps, provided Microsoft 365 Apps is version 2408 or later.
Where did Publisher go?
It is not in Office LTSC 2024. Microsoft has set Publisher’s end of life for October 2026, after which Microsoft 365 subscribers cannot open or edit Publisher files in Publisher at all, while perpetual Publisher from Office 2021 keeps running unsupported. Convert anything you need to Word or PowerPoint before then.
Do I need a KMS host, or is there something simpler?
For domain-joined machines, Active Directory-based activation is usually simpler: there is no host to maintain and no count threshold to reach. A KMS host makes sense where you already run one, and it needs five Office clients before it will activate anything. Isolated machines take MAK keys.
