Fix it now
Trend Micro can no longer see an active subscription for this installation. Before assuming the renewal failed, allow for the sync: Trend Micro documents that a subscription can take 24 to 48 hours to update across all your devices, and that different devices update at different times.
- Close and reopen the application, click the expiry date shown on the main window to make it re-check, and restart the device if it has not moved.
- If you bought or renewed in the last two days, wait. Trend Micro’s documented sync window is 24 to 48 hours across devices.
- Look for an email titled “Activate Your Subscription”, including in your spam folder. A renewal that arrives as an activation code does nothing until the code is used.
- Sign in to your Trend Micro Account and open the Licenses section. That is where an active subscription and the devices on it are listed.
- If the subscription is active and this device is not on it, enter the serial number in the console on this PC.
- If you bought through Best Buy, contact Geek Squad Support rather than Trend Micro; that route is handled separately.
Do not uninstall the product while you sort this out. An expired installation is easier to reactivate than a removed one, and removing it means finding the serial number again.
If the console shows an expiry date in the future and protection on, you are done. If not, the next section explains what is registered against what.
Why it happens
Trend Micro consumer products are sold as a subscription. The serial number you were given is registered against a Trend Micro Account with a number of device slots and an end date, and the installed product acts on the last answer it received about that record. When the answer says the term has ended, the console switches to the expired state and the components that need a live entitlement stop, pattern updates among them.
The gap between paying and the product noticing is where most of these reports live. Trend Micro documents that a subscription can take 24 to 48 hours to update on all your devices, and that devices sync at different times. That is a specific, published window, and it explains the household where the laptop is fine and the desktop still says expired. Restarting the console and clicking the expiry date pushes it along; nothing else on the machine will.
The second half of the problem is registration rather than payment. A subscription lives on an account and covers a number of devices. Bought while signed in to a different account, or applied to a device that has since been removed, the money is real and this machine still has nothing. The Licenses section of the Trend Micro Account settles which situation you are in faster than anything you can do on the PC.
The purchase has not synced yet
You have this one if You bought or renewed within the last two days and the console still reports expiry.
- Close and reopen the application, then click the expiry date on the main window to force a re-check.
- Restart the device if that changes nothing.
- Wait out the documented 24 to 48 hour window before treating it as a fault.
- Check other devices on the same subscription; they update at different times, so one being right does not mean this one is broken.
The renewal arrived as an activation code nobody used
You have this one if There is a payment confirmation but the account shows nothing new, and an unopened email is sitting somewhere.
- Search your inbox and spam folder for an email titled “Activate Your Subscription”.
- Use the code it contains in the Trend Micro Account, or enter the serial number in the console on this PC.
- If the email cannot be found, Trend Micro’s published route is to contact support by chat to have the code resent.
The subscription is active but this device is not on it
You have this one if The Licenses section shows a live subscription while this PC still reports as expired.
- Open the Licenses section and check the device list against the subscription.
- If a slot is free, enter that subscription’s serial number in the console on this PC.
- If every slot is taken by machines you still use, the subscription is smaller than your device count and needs extending.
- Remove devices you no longer own from the account so their slots return to the pool.
An automatic renewal failed to take payment
You have this one if The subscription was set to renew and the card on file has expired, been replaced or been declined.
- Sign in to the Trend Micro Account and check the payment method held against the subscription.
- Update the card details or complete the renewal manually.
- Restart the console so it re-checks, then allow for the sync window again.
The machine’s clock is wrong
You have this one if One PC reports expiry while others on the same subscription are fine, and its date or time zone is visibly incorrect.
- Turn on automatic date, time and time zone in Settings, Time and language, Date and time.
- Run
w32tm /resyncfrom an elevated Command Prompt. - Restart the console and let it re-check.
- Replace the motherboard battery if the clock is wrong again after the next shutdown.

Which situation you are in
| What you find | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Bought in the last 48 hours | Still inside Trend Micro’s documented sync window | Re-check, restart, wait |
| The account shows no active subscription | The term genuinely ended | Renew or buy |
| Active subscription, this PC not listed | The device was never registered or was removed | Enter the serial number on this PC |
| An unread “Activate Your Subscription” email | The renewal is bought but not applied | Use the code |
| Bought at Best Buy | Handled by Geek Squad | Contact Geek Squad Support |
| Several household devices expired together | One shared subscription ended | One renewal, not several |
Reading the account rather than the console
The console reports what it was last told. The account holds the truth. Sign in, open Licenses, and read three things: whether there is an active subscription, what its end date is, and which devices are listed against it. Those three answers between them cover every case in the table above, and none of them can be established from the PC.
What stops working, precisely
- Pattern updates stop. This is the one that matters; an antivirus that cannot update is not a reduced antivirus so much as a historical one.
- Components that require a live entitlement stop.
- The interface still opens, which is what makes this easy to ignore for weeks.
- Your settings and exclusions stay where they are and survive reactivation.
- Windows will bring Microsoft Defender back if you uninstall the product, which costs nothing and is genuine cover.
Entering a serial number on the machine
- Open the Trend Micro console on the PC that reports as expired.
- Find the option to enter or update the serial number, which the console offers when it is in the expired state.
- Enter the serial number exactly as it appears in the Trend Micro Account or the purchase confirmation.
- Let the product complete registration and download updates; the pattern files will be well behind.
- Confirm the console now shows an expiry date in the future rather than a grace message.
Renewal against a fresh purchase
Which is cheaper depends on the product, the term and the device count, and it moves. The thing worth checking before either is how many devices you actually need covered, because a subscription sized for a household two phones ago is the most common reason people end up buying twice. Count the PCs, laptops, phones and tablets you want protected, then price a subscription for that number rather than renewing the one you happen to hold.
Do not leave an expired suite installed as cover
An expired product still registers itself in places and confuses the picture, both for you and for Windows. If you have decided not to renew, uninstall it properly and confirm Microsoft Defender reports itself as on. That is a coherent position. Leaving an expired suite in place because the icon is still in the tray is not.
When a licence is the actual fix
Where the Trend Micro Account genuinely shows no active subscription, this is one of the errors that only a purchase resolves. There is no repair, no reinstall and no setting that produces an entitlement the product does not have, and an expired suite leaves the machine running on stale patterns. A current Trend Micro Maximum Security subscription restores protection and updates on this device. Arco supplies Trend Micro subscriptions and renewals, and can size the device count against the phones, tablets and PCs you actually want covered so that the renewal is not smaller than the household using it. If the account shows an active subscription and this PC is simply not on it, you do not need us – enter the serial number and you are done.
Every code this article covers
| Code | What it points at | Source |
|---|---|---|
Your subscription has expired |
The console reporting that no active entitlement is registered for this installation. Trend Micro documents a 24 to 48 hour window for a purchase to reach all devices, so a recent renewal is not necessarily a fault | Trend Micro support |
6404 |
An identifier seen alongside the same subscription refusal. Trend Micro publishes no meaning for it; work from the account and the serial number | not published by the vendor |
0x96000014 |
A component identifier seen when the product cannot obtain a usable subscription state. Trend Micro publishes no meaning for it | not published by the vendor |
Confirm the fix worked
- The console reports protection as on with no subscription warning.
- The expiry date shown in the console is in the future.
- This device appears in the Trend Micro Account against the active subscription.
- A manual update and a quick scan both complete.
- Restart and confirm the console still reports the subscription as active.
Questions people ask about this
I paid and it still says expired. What now?
Give it time first. Trend Micro documents that a subscription can take 24 to 48 hours to update across devices, and that devices sync at different times. Close and reopen the app, click the expiry date to force a re-check, and restart. If two days pass, check the Licenses section of your account and whether this device is listed.
Can I keep using it in some reduced form?
Not meaningfully. The product stays installed and the interface opens, but pattern updates stop, and that is the part that matters. An antivirus that cannot update gives a false sense of security rather than a reduced one.
I bought it at Best Buy. Who do I contact?
Geek Squad Support. Trend Micro documents that route separately from its own support for subscriptions bought there.
Is renewing cheaper than buying fresh?
It depends on the product, the term and the device count, and it varies. Compare both for your specific subscription rather than assuming renewal always wins, and count the devices you actually want covered while you are at it.
What protects the machine while I decide?
Microsoft Defender is included with Windows and takes over automatically once no active third-party antivirus is registered. It costs nothing and is a reasonable interim position, though it is not a way to keep Trend Micro running.
