Fix it now
These are update errors, not installation errors. Bitdefender documents -1002 as an unstable or temporarily unavailable internet connection, and -1022 as internet settings preventing the client from reaching its update servers. The fix is in the network path, not in the installed software.
ipconfig /flushdns
nslookup www.bitdefender.com
- Confirm the machine has working internet at all – load any website on the same PC.
- Restart the router, then the PC, and retry the update from the Bitdefender interface. Bitdefender lists this first for both -1002 and -1022.
- If
nslookupreturns no address, change the DNS servers the machine uses and retry. Bitdefender names a DNS change as the remedy for -1022 specifically. - Check the proxy. Open
inetcpl.cpl, go to Connections, then LAN settings, and compare what is set there with what Bitdefender’s own proxy settings expect. A proxy configured in one place and not the other produces -1004. - Retry the update from the Bitdefender interface and watch the update history rather than the dashboard – it tells you whether the last attempt reached the servers.
Do not uninstall your antivirus for this. These codes describe a connection to the update servers, so removing the product that is trying to update, or running a vendor removal tool, destroys your exclusions and settings and leaves the machine unprotected without addressing the error at all.
If the update completes and the definitions date moves, you are done. If it fails the same way, the next section covers the rest of the family and the two codes that are not what they look like.
Why it happens
This whole family is about reaching Bitdefender’s update servers. Bitdefender publishes them on a page titled for update errors, and the wording is unambiguous: -1002 occurs when your internet connection is unstable or temporarily unavailable, -1011 means the same thing, and -1022 means your internet settings are preventing Bitdefender from connecting to its update servers. None of them is an installation code, and Bitdefender’s actual installation-failure article names no numeric codes at all.
That distinction is the whole point of this page, because the wrong reading of it is expensive. If you treat -1002 as a setup rollback you end up removing a working antivirus and running a vendor removal tool, which discards local settings and exclusions and leaves the machine with no third-party protection – and the update still fails afterwards, because nothing you did touched the network.
Read the family together and the layers separate cleanly. Connectivity errors are the client not getting through at all. A proxy error is the client getting through to the wrong thing, or being asked to authenticate. A server-synchronising message is Bitdefender’s end, not yours. And a small number of codes on the page are not network at all: disk faults and low virtual memory, which stop an update for reasons that have nothing to do with the path.
One platform trap. -1008 is not a Windows code. Bitdefender documents it on its Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac update-errors page, grouped with -1003, -1004 and -1005 as a proxy connection issue where a proxy server is blocking updates. If you are on Windows and searching for -1008, you are reading Mac documentation.
The connection is unstable or unavailable
You have this one if The error is -1002 or -1011, and other things on the machine are also intermittent.
- Check the internet connection works with a browser on the same machine.
- Restart the router, then restart the PC.
- Retry the update from the Bitdefender interface.
- Where the machine genuinely has no usable connection, Bitdefender publishes an offline update route for its threat definitions.
Bitdefender’s own remedy for -1002 is exactly this sequence: check the connection, restart the router, restart the PC, or update offline.
Internet settings are blocking the update servers
You have this one if The error is -1022. Browsing works, but the client cannot get to Bitdefender.
- Restart the router and the PC first.
- Change the DNS servers the machine uses and retry – Bitdefender names this specifically for -1022.
- Check for router-level DNS filtering or parental controls that block update endpoints by category.
- Check the hosts file for stale entries left by an optimiser or an older security product.
A proxy is in the path and is not configured on both sides
You have this one if The error is -1004 on Windows, or -1003, -1004, -1005 or -1008 on a Mac.
- Open
inetcpl.cpland read the proxy configuration under Connections, LAN settings. - Enable the matching proxy setting inside Bitdefender if one is in use, or disable Bitdefender’s proxy setting if the machine has none.
- On a Mac, note Bitdefender’s own limitation: it can only update when the proxy server does not require authentication. Bypass the proxy for *.bitdefender.com or use a direct connection.
- Retry the update.
Bitdefender’s servers are synchronising
You have this one if The error is -2002 or -2009, and it appears on more than one machine at once.
- Wait. Bitdefender publishes a two to four hour window for this.
- If it is still failing after 24 hours, take it to Bitdefender support rather than rebuilding anything locally.
This one is worth recognising because every local fix you try during it appears to fail, and none of them was ever the problem.
The machine, not the network, is stopping the update
You have this one if Bitdefender reports error 3, 19, 21 or 1455 rather than a code in the -10xx range.
- For error 3, 19 or 21, run
chkdsk c: /rfrom an elevated Command Prompt and restart. Bitdefender describes 3 as a hard-drive issue, 19 as write-protected media and 21 as the device not being ready. - For 19 and 21, Bitdefender also asks for
sfc /scannowand the DISM image repair afterwards. - For 1455, open
sysdm.cpland let Windows manage virtual memory automatically – Bitdefender publishes it as the machine not having enough virtual memory to complete the operation.

There is no -1041 in that list, and none in Bitdefender’s Mac list, its installation-failure article or its subscription FAQ. If you have that number on screen, treat it as an unlabelled failure and work the layers rather than the code.
Testing the path properly
- Load any website on the same machine. If nothing loads, fix the connection first – Bitdefender is not the problem.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdnsfrom an elevated Command Prompt. - Resolve
www.bitdefender.comand see whether you get an answer at all. A resolution failure is DNS, and Bitdefender’s published remedy for -1022 is a DNS change. - Read the proxy configuration in
inetcpl.cplunder Connections, LAN settings, and compare it with what Bitdefender’s own settings expect. - Retry the update from the interface and read the update history, which tells you whether the last attempt reached the servers at all.
When it really is an installation failure
There is a separate article for that, and it is worth knowing which one you are in. Bitdefender’s installation-failure guidance covers the messages “Bitdefender Installation failed” and “Setup has encountered an error”, and it names no numeric code. Its steps are the ones people mistakenly apply to -1002: remove previous Bitdefender installations with the uninstall tool, uninstall competing security software, run Disk Cleanup, install again, then sfc, chkdsk, Windows updates, and finally folder permissions.
So the rule is simple. A numeric code in the ranges above is an update problem and the network is where to look. A named message with no number is an installation problem, and that is where removing a rival suite belongs – Bitdefender maintains an index of other vendors’ uninstall tools for exactly that job, alongside its own instruction never to have more than one security solution installed at the same time.
How long you can leave it
Not long. The engine keeps working on the definitions it already holds, so nothing looks broken on the dashboard, but detection of anything new stops improving from the moment updates stop. A week of failed updates is a real exposure. If the network problem is going to take days to resolve, Bitdefender publishes an offline route for updating threat definitions, and using it is a better interim answer than waiting.
Things that make this worse
- Do not uninstall your antivirus to fix an update error. It removes the thing that was working and leaves the thing that was not.
- Do not run a vendor removal tool speculatively. Bitdefender’s own removal guidance is for genuine setup failures, and removal discards local settings.
- Do not disable the firewall permanently as a test. Use it as a five-minute diagnostic and then write a rule.
- Do not chase a code that has no published meaning. Work the layers – connectivity, DNS, proxy, server status, disk – and the answer falls out of one of them.
When a licence is the actual fix
Nothing on this page needs a purchase, and it is worth saying so plainly because the wrong reading of these codes leads people to buy their way out of a network fault. -1002, -1011 and -1022 are connectivity errors: they cost nothing to fix and no licence changes them. There is exactly one adjacent case where a licence is the answer, and it looks different on screen – a subscription that has actually ended, where Bitdefender’s own documentation says the software stops functioning and stops updating as a consequence. If My Subscriptions in Bitdefender Central shows a past expiration date, that is a different problem and Arco supplies Bitdefender Total Security for it, sized to the devices you actually run. If the subscription is live, put your card away and fix the path.

Confirm the fix worked
- The update completes from the Bitdefender interface and the definitions date moves to today.
- The update history shows a successful attempt rather than a repeated failure.
nslookup www.bitdefender.comreturns an address from this machine.- The proxy configuration in
inetcpl.cplmatches what Bitdefender’s own settings expect. - Repeat the update a day later on the same connection to confirm the fix was permanent.
Questions people ask about this
Is -1002 an installation error?
No, and this is the single most costly misreading of it. Bitdefender documents -1002 on its update-errors page as an unstable or temporarily unavailable internet connection. Its installation-failure article, which covers “Bitdefender Installation failed” and “Setup has encountered an error”, names no numeric codes at all.
Should I uninstall my other antivirus to fix this?
No. Removing a working antivirus for a connectivity error destroys your exclusions and settings, leaves the machine unprotected, and does not touch the cause. Rival-product removal belongs to genuine setup failures, which show a named message rather than one of these numbers.
I am on Windows and I have -1008. What now?
Bitdefender documents -1008 on its Mac page, as part of a proxy connection issue. There is no published Windows meaning for it. Work the proxy and connectivity layers, which is where the neighbouring Windows codes point.
What is -1041?
Nothing Bitdefender publishes. It does not appear in the Windows update-error list, the Mac list, the installation-failure article or the subscription documentation. Diagnose by layer instead of by number.
The update fails on every machine in the house at once. Is that my router?
Possibly, but check the two codes Bitdefender publishes for its own end first: -2002 and -2009 mean the update servers are synchronising, with a stated two to four hour window. Local rebuilding during that window achieves nothing.
