Bitdefender subscription expired: protection stops and the app nags daily

11 min read Updated October 4, 2026 Antivirus & Endpoint Security

Fix it now

Bitdefender ties every installation to a subscription held in Bitdefender Central. When the app reports the subscription as expired, Central has no live slot covering this device. Bitdefender’s own wording is that once a subscription ends the software stops functioning – so this is not cosmetic.

  1. Sign in to Bitdefender Central and click My Subscriptions in the left-hand menu. The exact expiration date is shown directly under the subscription name.
  2. In the same account, open My Devices and check whether this computer is listed and how many slots are free.
  3. On the PC, check which Central account the app is signed into. If it is the wrong address, sign out and back in with the right one.
  4. If the subscription is live but every slot is used, open the device you are retiring under My Devices, click View details, then Remove in the top right, and confirm. The available slots update shortly afterwards.
  5. If the subscription has ended, renew it or apply a code: My Subscriptions, then Activate with code, then choose Extend current subscription or Add a new subscription.

If what you are actually seeing is a number in the -1002 or -1011 range rather than an expiry message, this is the wrong article. Those are update errors about connectivity, not licensing.

If the app shows a future expiry date and updates resume, you are done. If the account looks right and the PC still complains, the next section explains why.

Why it happens

Bitdefender Central holds your subscriptions, the activation codes that created them, and the list of devices consuming slots. The installed product authenticates to that account and caches the result. Everything the app tells you about your subscription is a reflection of Central, which is why the app can start complaining on a machine nobody has touched.

Bitdefender is blunt about the consequence: once your subscription ends, the software stops functioning and you no longer have access to its features. That is not a nag screen and a slow decline – it is the product standing down. Treat an expiry message as an outage rather than a reminder.

The pattern that catches people most often is a renewal or a new code applied to a second Central account. It happens easily – a purchase made with a different email address, a retailer that created an account at checkout, a family member activating a code on their own account. The subscription is genuinely live, just not on the account this PC is signed in to.

The second pattern is slot exhaustion, and it has a hidden contributor. Every installation consumes a slot until the device is removed in Central, and Bitdefender confirms that installing on a virtual machine uses one too. A plan that looks full is often half occupied by machines that no longer exist and test VMs nobody remembers building.

The subscription has run out

You have this one if The expiration date shown under the subscription name in My Subscriptions is in the past.

  1. Renew from Central, or buy a subscription and enter its activation code under My Subscriptions, Activate with code.
  2. Choose Extend current subscription if you are continuing the same plan, or Add a new subscription if it is a separate one.
  3. Restart the computer, or sign the app out and back in, so it re-reads the entitlement.
  4. Confirm the app now shows a future end date and that updates resume.

An expired payment card is the usual cause of a silent failed renewal, and nothing on the PC warns you until protection stops.

The licence is on a different Central account

You have this one if You have a receipt or an unused code, but the account the app uses shows nothing.

  1. Find the purchase confirmation and note which email address it was sent to.
  2. Sign in to Central with that address and check My Subscriptions there.
  3. On the PC, sign the app out and back in with the account that actually holds the subscription.
  4. Keep one account for all your Bitdefender purchases from now on. Split licensing across two accounts causes this repeatedly.

Every device slot is occupied

You have this one if The subscription is valid but Central shows no free slots, often with machines listed that you no longer use.

  1. Open My Devices in Central, click View details on a device you have replaced, sold or rebuilt, then Remove in the top right, and confirm.
  2. Count the virtual machines. Bitdefender states that an installation on a VM consumes a seat, and those are the entries people forget.
  3. Uninstall Bitdefender from any machine you removed but still own.
  4. Reactivate on the PC in front of you and confirm it appears in the list.

The client cannot revalidate against Central

You have this one if Central looks correct in every respect, but the PC has been offline, sits behind a filtering proxy, or has a badly wrong clock.

  1. Check the system date and time zone. A large error breaks the secure connection the check depends on.
  2. Run w32tm /resync from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. If a proxy or TLS-inspecting appliance is in the path, have Bitdefender’s endpoints excluded from inspection.
  4. Leave the machine online for a few minutes and reopen the app.

/force is not a documented parameter of w32tm /resync. The documented ones are /computer, /nowait, /rediscover and /soft.

What you are seeing is an update error, not a licence one

You have this one if The message carries a number in the -1002, -1011 or -1022 range rather than a plain expiry notice.

  1. Read the number. Bitdefender documents -1002 and -1011 as an unstable or temporarily unavailable internet connection, and -1022 as internet settings preventing the client from reaching its update servers.
  2. Check connectivity, DNS and proxy configuration rather than the subscription.
  3. Retry the update from the Bitdefender interface once the path is sound.

This distinction matters because the two problems look similar on the dashboard – the product is out of date either way – and the fixes have nothing in common.

Reading your Central account

What Central shows What it means What to do
Valid subscription, free slots, this PC missing The device was never added Install and sign in again on this machine
Valid subscription, no free slots Retired devices, or VMs, are holding them My Devices, View details, Remove
No subscription on this account The code or renewal went to a different Central account Find the receipt and sign in with that address
Expiration date in the past It has genuinely lapsed Renew, or activate a new code
Everything correct, app still complains The client cannot revalidate Check the clock, the proxy and the connection

Activating a code properly

  1. Sign in to Bitdefender Central.
  2. Either take the Activate your subscription prompt if one is shown, or go to My Subscriptions and choose Activate with code.
  3. Type the activation code and confirm.
  4. Supply billing details if asked – Bitdefender requires them for retail and third-party purchases so that automatic renewal can work.
  5. Choose Extend current subscription or Add a new subscription, depending on whether this continues an existing plan.

Bitdefender notes that activation codes are only issued after purchase, and come either in the confirmation email for an online order or printed on a card in a retail box. If you have no code and no confirmation, that is a purchase question rather than a technical one.

What the codes on this page are

Code Documented as Bearing on an expiry message
Bitdefender subscription expired Not published as a string Bitdefender publishes the outcome instead: the software stops functioning when the subscription ends
1011 An update error – unstable or temporarily unavailable internet connection None. It is a connectivity code, not a licensing one
1023 Not published anywhere in Bitdefender’s code sets Unknown; diagnose from Central rather than from the number

The middle row is worth pausing on if you arrived here searching for 1011. Bitdefender documents it on its Windows update-errors page, grouped with -1002 as an internet connection problem, and on the Mac page in the same grouping. Nothing published connects it to activation or entitlement, so a machine showing 1011 needs its network looked at, not its subscription.

Moving a subscription to a new computer

  1. Open My Devices in Central and remove the old machine, which frees its slot.
  2. Install Bitdefender on the new machine and sign in with the same account.
  3. Confirm the new device appears under My Devices and the app reports a future expiration date.
  4. Do the removal before you wipe the old machine, not after.

Walking away from the subscription

Remove Bitdefender and let Windows take the job back. Microsoft documents that Microsoft Defender Antivirus is re-enabled automatically if a non-Microsoft product expires, is uninstalled, or otherwise stops providing real-time protection, precisely so that antivirus protection is maintained on the endpoint. Confirm it afterwards in Windows Security under Virus & threat protection – and note that this is a legitimate destination, not a fallback of last resort.

When a licence is the actual fix

When the subscription really has ended, the licence is the fix and nothing on the machine substitutes for it. Bitdefender is explicit that once a subscription ends the software stops functioning, so this is an outage rather than a warning, and the protection gap grows from the day it happens. Arco supplies Bitdefender Total Security and can check how many device slots the plan you are considering includes, and whether it covers the other platforms in your household, before you buy rather than after you discover the shortfall – and it is worth counting virtual machines while you do, because Bitdefender confirms that a VM installation consumes a slot like any other. If Central shows a live subscription and this PC simply is not attached to it, there is nothing to buy. And if you decide not to renew at all, remove Bitdefender and let Microsoft Defender re-enable itself, which costs nothing.

Every code this article covers

Code What it points at Source
Bitdefender subscription expired Central holds no valid subscription slot covering this installation. Bitdefender does not publish this exact string; what it publishes is that the software stops functioning once the subscription ends not published by the vendor
1011 Bitdefender documents -1011 as an update error meaning the internet connection is unstable or temporarily unavailable. It is not a licensing code Bitdefender support
1023 Does not appear in Bitdefender’s published update-error, installation or subscription documentation. No meaning is published not published by the vendor

Confirm the fix worked

  1. The Bitdefender app shows a subscription with an expiration date in the future.
  2. My Devices in Central lists this computer against the active subscription.
  3. Updates complete and the product reports itself as fully protected.
  4. My Subscriptions shows the expected number of free slots for the machines you actually run.
  5. Restart and confirm the status holds rather than reverting to a renewal prompt.

Questions people ask about this

I renewed but the app still says expired. What now?

Check that the renewal is on the same Central account the app is signed into, and that this device holds a slot. Those two checks explain the large majority of paid-but-still-expired cases.

Does uninstalling free a device slot?

Remove the device in Central to be certain: My Devices, View details, Remove. Bitdefender says the available slots update shortly afterwards. The Devices page is the authoritative list, not the machine.

Do virtual machines use a slot?

Yes. Bitdefender states plainly that installing Bitdefender on a virtual machine uses a seat from your subscription. On a plan that looks mysteriously full, that is usually where the missing slots went.

I am seeing 1011, not an expiry message. Is that the same problem?

No. Bitdefender documents -1011 as an update error caused by an unstable or unavailable internet connection. Nothing published links it to your subscription, so check the network path rather than Central.

Is a key from a reseller as good as renewing through Bitdefender?

A genuine activation code applies to your Central account in exactly the same way. What matters is that it is legitimate and intended for your region and product tier, which is worth confirming before purchase rather than at activation time.
