Fix it now
The scanning engine failed to load into memory. The interface may still open, but the component that inspects files never initialised, so nothing is being scanned. It is not a detection and not a licence check – the message appears before any file has been examined.
appwiz.cpl
- Look for a second antivirus or anti-spyware product in the installed programs list. If one is present, suspect it first. Bitdefender’s own instruction is blunt: never have more than one security solution installed on your computer at the same time.
- Remove the rival product with its vendor’s own removal tool rather than the ordinary uninstaller, then restart. Bitdefender maintains an index of those tools for Windows and macOS.
- Reinstall Bitdefender by its published route: open
appwiz.cpl, select Bitdefender, click Uninstall, confirm at the User Account Control prompt, then click Reinstall in the window that appears. Let it finish, restart, and let the automatic download complete. - Open Bitdefender and run Update so the engine and its threat definitions are written as a matching pair.
- If the dialog returns, remove Bitdefender with the Bitdefender Uninstall Tool, restart, and install a current build from Bitdefender Central.
- If it still fails, run
sfc /scannowfrom an elevated Command Prompt, restart and reinstall.
Bitdefender’s dialog gives you Reinstall and Remove as separate buttons. Reinstall is the one that keeps the machine on a working path; Remove leaves it with nothing until you install something else.
If the dashboard reports protection as active and a scan counts files, you are done. If not, the next section explains where initialisation actually breaks.
Why it happens
The scanning engine is neither the tray icon nor the service. It is a set of libraries plus a compiled threat-definition set that a host process maps at start-up, behind a file system filter driver Windows calls whenever a file is opened. Initialisation means three things succeeding in order: the driver attaches, the libraries load, and the definition set is mapped and verified against them. Any one failing produces the same short dialog.
0xC0000005 is the number worth reading properly. Microsoft publishes it as STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION – an instruction referenced memory it could not access. That is a process fault, not a detection and not a disk error. Alongside this message it points at a mismatch: libraries from one build reading a definition set written by another, a half-finished update, or another security product injecting code into the same process. The host does not survive it, so the scanner never comes up.
1062 is a different complaint and a much simpler one. Microsoft publishes it as ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE: the service has not been started. Something tried to talk to a service that is not running. That is a service-state problem with a service-state fix, and it is worth checking before anything more invasive.
Bitdefender publishes no meaning for the dialog text itself, in either of the wordings people see. That matters less than it sounds, because the two codes beside it are documented and they point at different repairs – which is more than the message alone would ever give you.
A second real-time scanner is installed
You have this one if Another security suite appears in the installed programs list, or Windows Security shows more than one antivirus provider.
- Decide which product you are keeping. Two real-time scanners are not extra protection; each inspects the other’s files and both slow down.
- Run the removal tool published by the vendor of the product you are removing. Ordinary uninstallers routinely leave the filter driver behind, and it is the driver that causes the conflict.
- Restart afterwards, even if the tool does not ask.
- Reinstall Bitdefender by the
appwiz.cplroute, then update.
Microsoft Defender does not need removing. Microsoft documents that on a Windows client with a non-Microsoft antivirus registered, Defender goes into disabled mode by itself, and re-enables automatically if that product is uninstalled or stops providing real-time protection.
The engine files or definition set are damaged
You have this one if The failure began right after an update, a power loss or a disk problem, and a reinstall helps briefly before the message returns.
- Reinstall from
appwiz.cpl, taking the Reinstall option rather than Remove. - Restart and update manually so the engine and definitions are rewritten as a matching pair.
- If the disk is suspect, run
chkdsk C: /scanfrom an elevated Command Prompt and read the result before reinstalling anything else. - Where a reinstall does not hold, remove with the Bitdefender Uninstall Tool and install a freshly downloaded build rather than an old installer.
The Bitdefender service is not running
You have this one if 1062 accompanies the message, or the Bitdefender entries in services.msc show Stopped.
- Press Windows+R, type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find the Bitdefender entries, confirm each is set to start automatically, and start any that are stopped.
- If a service refuses to start, read the System log in Event Viewer at that timestamp; it names the component that failed.
- A service that will not start after a reinstall usually means the driver is blocked by another product or by a registry cleaner. Remove whatever blocked it, then reinstall.
The engine belongs to a different application, not to Bitdefender
You have this one if You see the message worded as a problem in the threat scanner component, and no Bitdefender product is installed at all.
- Look through the installed programs list for anti-spyware or system cleaning tools that advertise a licensed scanning engine.
- Update that application to its current release; an embedded engine is usually refreshed with it.
- If no update exists, remove the application. An engine that never initialises is doing nothing for you.
- Restart and confirm the dialog no longer appears.
This is the most commonly missed cause. The dialog names the scanner component, not the product hosting it, so people troubleshoot the wrong software for hours.
The removal itself is failing
You have this one if You have tried to remove Bitdefender and been told the removal finished with errors, or the uninstall tool hangs.
- Run the Bitdefender Uninstall Tool with Windows in Safe Mode, which is Bitdefender’s own remedy for a removal that finishes with errors.
- Restart, then install a current build from Bitdefender Central and sign in so the subscription reattaches.

What each code actually says
| Code | Published meaning | What it points at |
|---|---|---|
0xC0000005 |
STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION – the instruction referenced memory it could not access | The engine host process crashed; suspect a build and definition mismatch, or injected code |
1062 |
ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE – the service has not been started | Something tried to use a service that is not running |
| The dialog text itself | Not published by Bitdefender | Read the two codes above instead |
Reading the symptom
| What you see | Where the fault is |
|---|---|
| The dialog appears at sign-in | The engine host is loading at boot and failing there |
| You do not have Bitdefender installed on this PC | Another application embeds a licensed scanning engine, and that copy is failing |
| An Application Error in the Application log with exception code 0xc0000005 | A library or definition-set mismatch in the host process |
| 1062 alongside the message | A Bitdefender service is stopped |
| It returns within days of every reinstall | Look at the disk and at anything else writing into the Bitdefender folders |
Reinstalling the way Bitdefender documents it
- Click Start or press Windows+R, type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find Bitdefender in the list, click it, and choose Uninstall.
- Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Click Reinstall in the window that appears – not Remove.
- Wait for the progress bar to finish, then restart the device.
- Let the automatic download complete, then click Install and Finish.
The distinction between the Reinstall and Remove buttons in that dialog is the one thing worth getting right. Reinstall rewrites the product and leaves the machine protected at the end of it. Remove leaves you with nothing installed and a separate decision to make, and it is the button people press by accident when they are following a guide written for a different product.
What is scanning the machine right now
Nothing from Bitdefender, at least. The message is raised before any file has been examined, so whatever else is true, the engine did not come up. The compounding problem is that Bitdefender may still hold the antivirus registration with Windows, and Microsoft documents that Defender moves into disabled mode when a non-Microsoft antivirus is registered on a client. Open Windows Security and read what Virus & threat protection reports; if nothing is genuinely scanning, treat it as urgent.
Microsoft also documents the safety net: Defender is re-enabled automatically if the non-Microsoft product expires, is uninstalled or otherwise stops providing real-time protection. A product whose engine never loads may or may not report that state, which is why the check is worth doing by hand rather than trusting to it.
When it keeps coming back
- Check the Application log at sign-in for an Application Error naming the engine host process and its exception code.
- Check whether a backup or sync product restores older versions of files into the Bitdefender folders.
- Check whether a registry or disk cleaner has a profile that touches those folders, and exclude them.
- Run
chkdsk C: /scan. Damage that recurs on a fresh installation is usually storage rather than software. - Test the memory. Files that verify when written and fail when read are a classic memory symptom, and no number of reinstalls addresses it.
When a licence is the actual fix
Most readers of this page do not need to buy anything: a conflicting product or a damaged installation is free to fix, and Windows ships with Microsoft Defender if you decide not to replace the suite at all. There is one case where money is genuinely part of the answer. If the copy on the machine is an expired trial or an unlicensed build, repairs loop – the suite disables components it is no longer entitled to run, and the engine has nothing coherent to initialise. A current Bitdefender Total Security licence restores the full component set and keeps the engine and its threat definitions updating in step. Arco supplies Bitdefender Total Security and will check which device count matches the machines you actually need to cover. If Bitdefender Central shows a live subscription, this is a technical fault and there is nothing here to buy.

Confirm the fix worked
- The Bitdefender dashboard reports protection as active with no outstanding issues.
- A quick scan runs and the file counter moves – an engine that loaded reports files examined.
- The Bitdefender entries in
services.mscshow Running with automatic start. - Windows Security under Virus & threat protection names one active antivirus provider.
- Restart once and confirm no Application Error is logged at sign-in.
Questions people ask about this
Is this message itself a sign of infection?
No. It is raised before any scanning happens, so it tells you nothing about the state of the machine. It does mean you are unprotected while it persists, but it is not a detection.
What does 0xC0000005 mean here?
Microsoft publishes it as STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION – an instruction referenced memory it could not access. In this context it means the process hosting the engine crashed, which usually points at libraries and a definition set that do not match, or at another security product injecting code into it.
Do I have to buy anything to clear it?
Usually not. A conflicting product or a damaged install is free to fix, and Windows ships with Microsoft Defender if you decide not to replace the suite. Money is only part of the answer when the licence has expired and the product keeps disabling the components it needs.
Can I keep two antivirus products if I only scan on demand with one?
On-demand scanners that install no filter driver generally coexist. Two products with real-time protection do not, and Bitdefender’s own documentation states the rule directly: never have more than one security solution installed at the same time.
Will reinstalling lose my settings?
A full removal will – exclusions, firewall rules and scheduled scans do not survive it. That is why Bitdefender’s documented route offers Reinstall as a separate button from Remove. The licence itself is held against your Bitdefender Central account, so reinstalling costs you nothing there.
